[맥락따라] 'pull', 'drag', 'tug ' 끌다

 

'pull, drag, tug' 는 '끌다'라는 이미지를 가지고 있다.
상황에 따라 조금씩 다르게 쓰인다.

 

'pull'은 가장 '일반적인 끌다' 이다.
보통은 화자의 몸 쪽으로 무언가를 당길 때 쓴다.
  He pulls his coffee mug across the table.
  She pulled the plug out.
  He pulls out his gun on her.
  He pulls the trigger.
무언가를 원래 자리에서 제거할 때 쓴다.(remove)
  They pull weeds every summer.
  I,m pulling out gray hairs.
  She has the decayed tooth pulled out.
(잘못된) 무언가를 출판이나 공표 등으로부터 제거할 때 쓴다.(remove)
  She pulled the story from the magazine. 
  The TV show pulled the controversial photos from its segment.
사람들을 끌 때 쓴다.(attract)
  This pianist pulls huge crowds.
정보를 얻을 때 쓴다.(get)
  I pulled this photo from his cellphone.
패닉 중에 정신적으로 힘을 모을 때도 쓴다.(become calm)
  He pulled himself gether to be calm. 주어와 목적어가 같아야 한다.
자신의 몫을 가질 때도 쓴다.
  Everyone needs to pull their weight on the team.
권력이나 힘을 사용할 때도 쓴다.
  My boss pulled rank on me to write reviews.

 

 

'drag'는 '저항이 있는 상황에서 질질 끌다' 이다.
저항이 있는 끄는 표현을 할 때 쓴다.
  He dragged the big suitcase.
원치 않는 상황으로 끌어들일 때 쓴다.
  Don't drag me into this business.

 

'tug'는 '큰 힘,노력으로 질질 끌다' 이다.
큰 힘이 필요한 상황에서 세게 끄는 표현을 할 때 쓴다.
  The horse finally tugged the cart out of the mud.
큰 노력을 표현을 할 때 쓴다.
  She tugged for years to make a decent living.
